Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth has openly criticized the national selectors for their decision to field a full-strength squad for the upcoming T20 International series against Afghanistan. Srikkanth believes this choice reflects a fear-driven approach following recent defeats, rather than an opportunity to nurture emerging talent.
India's recent performances have raised eyebrows, as the team suffered a disappointing 0-2 series loss against Ireland, followed by a 0-4 defeat to England in July. With the Afghanistan series set to take place in familiar home conditions, Srikkanth argues that this would have been an ideal opportunity to experiment with younger players who could benefit from international exposure.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth described the selectors' decision as a “mistake,” suggesting that the recent setbacks led to a conservative selection strategy. He stated, “After the series losses in Ireland and England, the selectors have decided not to take a chance and picked a full-strength squad for Afghanistan. They are going all guns blazing, but this is a mistake. It’s against teams like Afghanistan that you should try out youngsters. Instead, you’ve picked a full-strength squad out of fear.”
Srikkanth further elaborated on his concerns, questioning the selectors' rapid return to an experienced lineup after they had previously opted to test new players during the Zimbabwe series. He remarked, “It feels like a desperation move after the Ireland and England losses. But this squad is almost the same as the one they picked for England.”
The Indian squad for the Afghanistan series includes notable players such as Shreyas Iyer, who will captain the team, and Tilak Varma, who serves as vice-captain. Other experienced names like Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, and Varun Chakaravarthy are also part of the 15-member squad. Notably, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has retained his place following a promising performance in the Zimbabwe series.
The three-match T20I series against Afghanistan is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on September 13, 15, and 17, all at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, the participation of players such as Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana remains uncertain as they await fitness clearance. Hardik Pandya has been ruled out due to a setback in his rehabilitation process.
Srikkanth also raised concerns regarding the match fitness of players included in the squad. He emphasized the importance of actual match readiness, stating, “These four have not proved match-fitness. So on what basis are they subject to fitness? Just because you prove your fitness at the Bengaluru CoE, are you fit? That’s how Harshit Rana went to England, and then what happened to him there? So match fitness is important.”
Ultimately, Srikkanth's critique highlights a significant debate within Indian cricket regarding the balance between experience and youth, particularly in light of recent performances. Instead of using the Afghanistan series as a platform to assess and develop new talent, he believes the selectors have opted for a more conservative approach in response to their earlier losses.
