Kusal Mendis Appointed Captain for Sri Lanka's T20I and ODI Series Against England

Sri Lanka Cricket has officially announced its squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of England, appointing Kusal Mendis as the captain for both the T20I and ODI formats. The series, which consists of three T20 internationals and three one-day internationals, is scheduled to take place from September 15 to September 27.

Joining Mendis in leadership is Charith Asalanka, who will serve as the vice-captain. The selection committee has opted for a balanced mix of seasoned players and newcomers, showcasing the depth of talent within Sri Lankan cricket. Notably, off-spinner Tharindu Rathnayake has received his first call-up for the T20I series, while leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage, at the age of 28, has been included in the ODI squad for his international debut.

Mendis will be supported by a strong core of experienced players, including Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, and Wanindu Hasaranga, all of whom are expected to play pivotal roles in both formats. The bowling line-up is bolstered by the presence of Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, and Eshan Malinga, with Dunith Wellalage also maintaining his position across both squads.

The T20I squad sees several notable additions, including Lahiru Udara, Tharindu Rathnayake, Nuwan Thushara, and Binura Fernando, reflecting the selectors' intent to inject fresh talent into the team. This strategic move aims to enhance the team's competitiveness against a formidable England side.

In the ODI squad, the inclusion of Sachindu Colombage is particularly significant, marking a milestone in his career as he prepares to make his international debut. The squad also features Pavan Rathnayake, while the pace attack is strengthened by Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka, providing a robust bowling option for the series.

The T20I series kicks off in Southampton on September 15, followed by matches in Cardiff on September 17 and Manchester on September 19. After the T20I matches, the teams will transition into the ODI series, starting in Chester-le-Street on September 22. The second ODI is set for Leeds on September 24, with the tour concluding at The Oval on September 27. This tour is crucial for Sri Lanka as they seek to build momentum ahead of future international competitions.
