Sophie Cunningham’s comments about transgender participation in women’s sports have sparked a wide-ranging debate, and Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma has now entered the conversation.
The former NBA champion publicly defended Cunningham after sportscaster Chris Williamson suggested the Indiana Fever guard’s comments contributed to political hostility directed toward transgender people.
Kuzma questioned that interpretation in an X post, arguing that Cunningham’s stated position centered on competitive fairness and the protection of opportunities for women and girls.
“What was transphobic about her comment?” Kuzma wrote, before reiterating Cunningham’s position and sarcastically questioning whether she deserved discipline.

Her clarification did little to quiet the discussion.
Williamson later argued that the WNBA’s decision not to discipline Cunningham created space for additional political backlash against the league and the transgender community. Kuzma strongly disagreed, becoming one of the most recognizable active NBA players to publicly support Cunningham.
The WNBA has not announced discipline related to her remarks.

Cunningham remains an important part of Indiana’s rosterThe controversy has unfolded during a productive season for Cunningham and the Fever. Cunningham is averaging 8.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while playing approximately 23 minutes per game. Her outside shooting also has been valuable for an Indiana team preparing for the postseason.
She entered Monday ranked third in the WNBA in 3-point percentage at 44.1 percent, trailing teammate Kelsey Mitchell and one other qualifying player. Cunningham has developed a reputation for being direct, both during games and away from the court. That personality has made her popular with many Fever supporters, but it also means her public comments routinely attract attention beyond Indiana.
Kuzma’s response is unlikely to end the debate. It does, however, demonstrate how far the conversation has traveled beyond the WNBA. A discussion that began with one role player’s interview now includes media personalities, political arguments and a former NBA champion prepared to challenge Cunningham’s critics.
