Kyler Murray named Vikings starting quarterback

EAGAN, MN (KELO) — The Minnesota Vikings announced that Kyler Murray will be the team’s starting quarterback on Tuesday ahead of training camp.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell gave Murray the title after 10 days of battling the Vikings 2024 first round pick, JJ McCarthy, in camp. Murray spent his last seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. O’Connell shared that despite moving forward with Murray, the story is only getting started for 23-year old McCarthy.

“He’s still a guy that’s only played 10 games,” O’Connell said. “He’s shown improvement off of last year and even in this training camp, with the work he’s put in and his comfort level just growing a little bit, day in and day out.”

McCarthy threw for 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in those 10 games last season. Both quarterbacks got their fair share of reps at practice on Tuesday and are set to get snaps in the Vikings first preseason game on Saturday against the New York Giants.
