La Masia prodigy gains prominence in the Barcelona squad after brilliant performance vs Elche

Barcelona kickstarted their season in a positive way, securing a comprehensive 5-0 win over Elche CF in their opening match.

While much of the chatter was surrounding the performances of new signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, it was La Masia prodigy Xavi Espart who stole the show in defence.

Starting at left-back, the youngster produced an exemplary performance, playing a key role in the build-up while managing to keep the clean sheet.

The 19-year-old was heavily involved throughout, drawing the penalty on Raphinha with his high press in the first half before continuing to win the ball back after the break.

He finished with six recoveries and even assisted Fermin Lopez for Barcelona’s final goal, a complete display in an area the squad has long viewed as a weak link.

Indeed, the full-back positions were considered the most exposed part of Flick’s system last season, given the high defensive line and aggressive press.

Espart, however, read the game superbly, showing exactly the kind of intelligence required to thrive in that demanding role.

Flick full of praise

Hansi Flick was quick to praise the youngster after the match, hailing his versatility and composure.

“He played in the Under-19 tournament, he’s at 100%. His level is really good, I love it. Another La Masia player at this level is incredible. He doesn’t mind playing as an 8, a 5, on the left, it’s impressive,” Flick said.

“You don’t have to tell him much, he knows what he has to do. He’s fantastic with the ball,” added the coach, who has previously compared Espart to Bayern Munich and Germany legend Philipp Lahm.

Espart’s performance against Elche is a positive sign for a Barcelona team that might want to sell Alejandro Balde, with Manchester United emerging as a potential suitor.
