In a significant move for the motorsport community, Lando Norris has announced the establishment of his own junior race team and driver development program, aimed at guiding underfunded talent toward Formula 1. The announcement was made on Wednesday, introducing two key initiatives: the LN4 Fusion race team and the LN4 Legacy program.
LN4 Fusion will be managed by Rene Rosin, a veteran in the racing world and former leader of the renowned Prema team. The new team is set to compete in various categories, including Formula 2, Formula 3, and British Formula 4, with Dan Hazlewood overseeing operations in the UK. This strategic move aims to create a competitive environment for young drivers looking to make their mark in motorsport.
Complementing the race team, the LN4 Legacy program is designed to provide comprehensive support for aspiring drivers. Led by Julian Rouse, the former sporting director at Alpine, this initiative will focus on identifying promising young talents and assisting them through the FIA's competitive ladder. Norris expressed his commitment to giving back to the sport, particularly in light of the rising costs associated with single-seater racing.
"The legacy program is more to pick out individuals, people that we believe can get to Formula 1 and try and help them one at a time. That’s our initial goal," Norris explained. He acknowledged the financial challenges that many young drivers face, stating, "The fact that drivers have to kind of go out of their way to do it is an acknowledgment of how difficult it is." Currently, the LN4 Legacy program is set to support one yet-to-be-named junior driver, with hopes of expanding the initiative as funding increases.
Norris highlighted the substantial financial backing required to launch such projects, estimating that tens of millions would be needed to establish a fully operational team. He remains optimistic about the future, stating, "We’ve got to start somewhere. And I’m happy that I’m trying to help at least one to begin with, and then we’ll work on two and then three and then four and five."
On the operational side, Norris believes that Rosin is the perfect choice to lead LN4 Fusion, citing their long-standing relationship and Rosin's extensive experience in the sport. Norris stated, "I’ve known Rene for many years, since I started to go into single-seaters. We wanted to put together a group that is experienced and knows how to lead a team and not just create one good team." The positive reception from the industry has been encouraging, with Rosin reportedly receiving several hundred job applications shortly after the announcement.
While Norris is excited about these new ventures, he is also aware that addressing the broader financial barriers in motorsport requires collective action. He called upon the FIA and Formula 1 management to take steps to reduce the costs associated with entering the sport. "If you want to help bigger areas and economies that are just worse to kind of start racing and allow people to start their dream, it’s much bigger than just me doing my job and trying to help out on that," he noted.
As Norris embarks on this ambitious journey, he remains focused on his responsibilities with McLaren, balancing his racing career with his commitment to nurturing the next generation of drivers.
