Indianapolis Colts' special teams coordinator Brian Mason suffered a significant knee injury on the final play of the team's first preseason game against the New England Patriots.
According to the Indy Star's Joel Erickson, Mason "has multiple torn knee ligaments." Mason did fly back with the team on Thursday night.

— Joel A. Erickson (@JoelAErickson) August 14, 2026The injury occurred when a Colts player and a Patriots player were locked as they blocked each other and went flying onto the Colts' sideline, where Mason was knocked over. He was immediately in significant pain.
What this injury means for Mason in the immediate future as far as coaching the special teams unit still remains to be seen.
Of note, Joe Hastings is the Colts' senior assistant special teams coach. The 2026 season will be Hastings' sixth with the Colts and third in his current role.
