Lazio eye surprise swoop for Milan’s out-of-favour Tomori; Rossoneri like Tavares

Lazio are weighing a surprise move for Fikayo Tomori as they look to strengthen Gennaro Gattuso’s defence.

According to Il Messaggero, via LaLazioSiamoNoi, the Biancocelesti are considering the Milan centre-back as a reinforcement at the back, a deal that would extend the developing axis between the two clubs.

After negotiations over Mario Gila, who has been targeted by Milan, a Rossoneri player could now make the opposite journey from Milan to Rome. Milan are said to be open to the idea though it is a deal likely to develop only in the closing days of the window.

There are no firm details on the formula as yet, but one name looms as a potential makeweight.

Nuno Tavares, whom Milan admire and who is among Lazio’s sacrificeable players, could be used as an exchange piece in a Tomori deal, with the caveat that 40% of any Tavares sale would be owed to Arsenal under the sell-on clause from his move from the Gunners.

The move makes sense for both sides.

Tomori, an England international, has fallen out of Rúben Amorim’s plans at Milan, with owner Gerry Cardinale confirming at a recent summit that the defender is no longer part of the project.

For Lazio, working within tight financial constraints, a swap-based operation offers a route to the quality Gattuso has requested without a heavy outlay. With the market entering its final stretch, the pieces may yet fall into place for one of the summer’s more unexpected transfers.
