LeBron James Partners with Polymarket After DraftKings Deal Ends

LeBron James is making headlines once again, this time by aligning himself with Polymarket, a prominent prediction market. This strategic move comes after the expiration of his endorsement deal with DraftKings earlier this summer, as confirmed by sources familiar with the situation.

On Saturday morning, James took to social media to announce his new partnership, teasing his followers about the upcoming collaboration. His post on X, formerly known as Twitter, garnered nearly 10 million views within just seven hours, showcasing his immense influence and reach. According to insiders, this announcement is merely the initial phase of a larger campaign set to launch in the coming week, with a specific focus on football, mirroring the themes of his previous agreement with DraftKings, which he first signed in 2024.

While the NBA does not have a specific policy that prohibits players from endorsing prediction markets, there are restrictions in place. Players are not allowed to promote contracts related to specific NBA events, which aligns with the league's current stance on traditional sports betting. This distinction allows James to navigate his new partnership with Polymarket while adhering to league regulations.

This partnership marks a significant development in the ongoing competition between Polymarket and Kalshi for high-profile sports endorsements. Polymarket has secured league-level agreements with several major sports organizations, including MLB, NHL, MLS, Serie A, and LaLiga, as well as team-level partnerships with franchises like the New York Rangers and Yankees. Notably, NFL star Saquon Barkley is also reportedly an investor in Polymarket, further highlighting the platform's growing prominence.

On the other hand, Kalshi has attracted notable athletes such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kyle Kuzma, and Breanna Stewart as investors and is an official partner of the NHL. Kalshi has also established team-level agreements with several MLB and NHL teams, including the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox. Recently, they secured a last-minute deal with the U.S. Open, further cementing their position in the sports prediction market.

As the NBA season approaches, sources indicate that the league is expected to finalize its own prediction-market partnerships. However, there is no indication that James's agreement with Polymarket is directly related to the NBA's plans. The 2023-2024 NBA season is set to tip off with James's first regular-season game as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers on October 20 against the New York Knicks.

Despite the increasing acceptance of prediction markets in mainstream society, they continue to face scrutiny from certain states that view these platforms as a form of illegal sports betting. A recent appeals court ruling against Kalshi has raised questions about the future of prediction markets, potentially leading to a Supreme Court showdown. While experts believe that the issue of sports-event contracts will eventually reach the highest court in the nation, there is no immediate guarantee that this will happen.

Representatives for James have declined to comment on the new partnership, and DraftKings has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the end of their collaboration.
