Bayer Leverkusen are into the second round of the German Cup as coach Carles Martínez made his official debut with a 4-0 win against third-division side Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday.
There were also first-round wins for fellow Bundesliga sides Augsburg, Hoffenheim, Elversberg and Werder Bremen, whose new loan signing Niclas Füllkrug scored from the spot on his return to the club.
Leverkusen veteran Patrik Schick scored their first goal of the new season in the 43rd minute as he collected the rebound after Ibrahim Maza's effort was blocked by defender Ben Nink.
The 2024 Cup winners were on target again early in the second half. Schick's header after Miguel's cross was parried by the goalkeeper, but Lucas Vázquez picked up the rebound and slotted in from close range.
Nathan Tella practically sealed the win for the Bundesliga side in the 69th. Leverkusen recovered the ball in midfield and countered, with two players avoiding tackles to retain the ball before Tella fired it into the goal.
Christian Kofane added his name to the scoresheet in the 79th.
Martínez said: "I enjoyed my first game. It was very special. We have some things to improve, but the team was focused and the game was good."
Augsburg are also through thanks to a 2-0 victory against second-division team Energie Cottbus.
Michael Gregoritsch laid the ball into Anton Kade's path, who dribbled past the defender and scored the opener from the edge of the box in the 50th. The hard-fought win was sealed by Kristijan Jakic in stoppage time.
Leipzig game to come
Bremen edged fifth-tier Lüneburger SK Hansa 3-0 thanks to Jens Stage's header and on-loan West Ham forward Füllkrug's penalty at St Pauli's ground in Hamburg. Ludovit Reis added the gloss.
Patrick Wimmer scored twice as Hoffenheim throttled fourth-division Erzgebirge Aue 4-0.
Elversberg, who will open their debut Bundesliga season next weekend, won 3-1 at third-tier MSV Duisburg. But the Saarlanders were fortunate that video review is not available in the first round after a potential foul in the build-up to Luca Schnellbacher's opener.
Saturday's schedule also includes Eintracht Trier at home to RB Leipzig in the late game. The team from the lower division normally plays at home in the German Cup first round.
On Friday, Eintracht Frankfurt advanced to the second round with an 11-0 thrashing of SC St Tönis and VfB Stuttgart beat Hansa Rostock 4-0.
There was serious crowd trouble on Friday at second-tier Kaiserslautern's 1-0 extra-time win at local rivals Waldhof Mannheim of the third division. The game was almost abandoned, and 35 police officers were injured.
Title holders Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund had their matches against VfL Osnabrück and HEBC Hamburg postponed to September as both will contest the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup later on Saturday.
A flurry of first-round fixtures follow on Sunday and Monday.
