In the world of softball, a strong leadoff hitter can set the tone for the entire team. Recently, Lilly Garcia of the Tahlequah Lady Tigers has exemplified this role with remarkable success. The sophomore shortstop has been on fire, contributing significantly to her team's offensive output over the past four games.
During this stretch, Garcia has recorded an impressive 8-for-11 batting average, scoring 10 runs and driving in five more. Her standout performance in the latest game against Coweta featured a solo home run to start the game, followed by a walk, an RBI single, and three runs scored. Additionally, she showcased her defensive skills with several key plays in the field, demonstrating her all-around value to the team.
“She’s getting back to being dialed in,” said Tahlequah High School Coach Chris Ray. “I think her confidence is there, and she’s starting to get her timing down.” Despite being just in her second year at the varsity level, Garcia has quickly become a cornerstone of the Lady Tigers' lineup. This season, she boasts a .340 batting average, a .470 on-base percentage, and an impressive 1.149 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Garcia leads her team with 28 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, four triples, and three home runs across 20 games. Her success at the plate is attributed to a focused mentality and rigorous practice. “Just my mentality has been key for me,” Garcia explained. “Mentality is a big part of my success. Knowing what I’m hunting and when it’s there, I hit it. It’s been a lot of work at home, hitting rounds off the tee, off my dad pitching; just a bunch of reps.”
Garcia is not the only player making waves for the Lady Tigers. The entire team has been performing exceptionally well, outscoring their opponents 41-0 during this four-game stretch. This impressive run is part of a larger 12-game winning streak that includes seven shutouts, highlighting the team's dominance on both offense and defense. The Lady Tigers have averaged 9.58 runs per game this season, with a total of 115 runs scored.
“We’ve executed our short game really well,” Coach Ray noted. “We’ve manufactured runs early to get a lead, and then we’ve just been letting the kids swing away. They’re doing a pretty good job of being productive at the plate with smart at-bats.” With six weeks left in the season, Ray emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement, focusing on refining their approach at the plate.
Garcia added, “I think we can be better at what we swing at. Sometimes we get ahead of ourselves, get back in the count and swing at wild pitches, so we are working on that.” The team's commitment to making solid contact has also been a key factor in their recent success. Early in the season, Coach Ray noticed too much soft contact, but he has seen a shift towards harder hits recently.
“We want all nine of them on time, having quality at-bats. We are looking for hard-hit balls; 75% is the goal we’ve set. I said, ‘If three out of every four balls are hit hard, I’m happy.’ Eventually, those hard-hit balls are going to find holes, or teams are going to make mistakes,” Ray explained.
The Lady Tigers' pitching has also been stellar during this stretch, with four consecutive shutouts marking the second time this season they have achieved such a feat. Alix Kimble began this impressive run with a four-inning no-hitter against Del City, while Zoie Griffin contributed to the success by pitching 19 innings, allowing only three hits, striking out 41 batters, and walking just one.
“It all starts in the circle,” Ray said. “We’re going to attack hitters with Zoie and Alix. When people put the ball in play, we’re making plays behind her.” With their current form, the Lady Tigers hold an impressive 18-2 record this season. They are set to return to action on Tuesday, September 7, at home against Owasso, looking to continue their winning ways.
