Lions fans react to preseason opener vs. Bengals

Although the Detroit Lions dropped their 2026 NFL preseason opener to the Cincinnati Bengals 16-14 at Cincinnati's Paycor Stadium on Thursday night, the contest provided valuable information for head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes as they continue to evaluate their players.

Despite trailing for over three quarters of the game in a contest that featured a significant number of Bengals starters getting playing time as opposed to second- and third-string players for the Lions, Detroit actually finished with more net yards (274) and one fewer penalty (9) than Cincinnati.

While there were many bright spots as well as areas for improvement and attention in Thursday's contest, here are some of the more notable fan reactions to the various ups and downs from the Lions in their clash with the Bengals:

Proof that TeSlaa is a one hand only kind of a guy. https://t.co/2b0jYnA3s1

Ahmed Hassanein with the sack. Loss of 9 for the Bengals. Hassanein has impressed in camp. Good to see that translate in the game #Lions

Ahmed Hassanein: Dan Campbell said in a team meeting this morning that he envisions me sacking Joe Burrow.

Hassanein got him on his first snap.

He later said he cried for a second after the sack but locked back in because “I had to get back on defense.” pic.twitter.com/JzHQIlWC8T

Rakestraw was in the locker room after the game, wasn't wearing a brace or sling or anything like that on his arm. He said X-rays showed everything is fine structurally.

Nothing long term?

Altmyer played decent for first nfl game tesla is to blame for interception i think the kid has potential

A little surprised we're seeing Josh Dobbs already but let's see what the Passtronaut can do with one practice...

— Jeff Risdon (@JeffRisdon) August 14, 2026

Campbell said the plan was always to get Josh Dobbs in during the second quarter so he could be with the top OL.

Wasn't related to Altmyer's fumble.

I only focus on positives in preseason

- Miller is ready
- Abney loves contact and makes good reads
- Whiteside is what they’ve been saying
- Rakestraw made some great plays pre-injury
- Hassanein looks quicker and more aggressive
- Backup QB spot is fine https://t.co/PDmNlyClI7
