Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph remains away from the team while dealing with a personal issue, but Lions coach Dan Campbell remains optimistic about the veteran safety's return to the field this fall.
"Nothing new," Campbell said Tuesday, Aug. 25. "He’s doing well."
Joseph has not practiced this summer because of a degenerative knee condition that kept him out most of last year.
He is currently on the physically unable to perform list, and he has not attended a practice since early August while dealing with a personal issue.
Joseph took part in intense workouts on a side field with trainers at the start of training camp, when he said he was "super optimistic" about his return. Campbell said at the start of camp it was unlikely Joseph would be ready for the start of the regular season.
Players who open the season on the PUP list must miss at the least the first four games.
Campbell said is not currently with the team. "He will be, though."
Safety Thomas Harper also is dealing with an ankle injury that could keep him out of this week's preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts, and Campbell said veteran linebacker Damone Clark is done for the preseason and out indefinitely with an injury he suffered early in training camp.
The Lions signed Clark to be a backup linebacker and special teams player. Now, he is a candidate to start the season on injured reserve.
"He is done indefinitely," Campbell said. "So this injury took place, shoot man, three weeks ago, I guess, two weeks ago. So unfortunately it’s significant enough to where he’ll be out indefinitely,"
