Lions tryout duo, including former Detroit first-round NFL draft pick

Per the NFL's transaction wire, the Detroit Lions hosted a pair of guards on Thursday tryouts, including former Detroit first-round NFL draft pick Laken Tomlinson.

Tomlinson, who the Lions drafted with the 28th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, spent the first two seasons of his career in Detroit. The 34-year-old played in 32 games and started 24 with the Lions.

After losing his job to Graham Glasgow during the 2017 season, Tomlinson was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round pick. Tomlinson spent the 2017-21 seasons with the 49ers, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2021.

The Duke alum would then spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the New York Jets, the 2024 season with the Seattle Seahawks and last season with the Houston Texans, where he started seven out of 10 games before being waived by the Texans in December. Tomlinson would finish the 2025 season on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad.

In his NFL career, Tomlinson has played in 173 games and started 162.

Detroit also welcomed in guard Will Hernandez.

Hernandez, 30, is a former 2018 second-round pick by the New York Giants out of UTEP that has familiarity with Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. The pair spent the past three seasons together with the Arizona Cardinals.

Hernandez made 29 starts with Arizona over the last three seasons, but injuries limited Hernandez to just 12 games played and started over the last two seasons with the Cardinals.

Hernandez suffered a season-ending, torn ACL in 2024 and then his recovery delayed his 2025 return. After appearing in seven games in 2025, Hernandez was placed on injured reserve as he battled hip and knee injuries.

In Hernandez's NFL career, he has appeared in 104 games and started 98.
