Liverpool fans have been commenting ahead of this Newcastle United match.
A 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday at St James’ Park.
Always a big occasion, this time arguably the biggest for a long time, give or take a cup final at Wembley.
A huge moment ahead of kick-off when both sets of fans will be honouring Kevin Keegan.
Then the first whistle of the season for both clubs, as Liverpool fans andNewcastle United fans get the first real clues as to how their seasons may turn out.
Liverpool fans with plenty to say ahead of this huge game…
Liverpool fans commenting via their Anfield Online Forum message board:
‘If we don’t put 8 past these then, well, we’re probably holding a few goals back so we can wallop Forest a week later.’
‘I must say I’m not taking anything for granted – always a great atmosphere at St James’s and that team still has plenty going for it. Added to the fact that both teams are getting used to new coaches and I think it’s a bit of a wildcard of a game.
Spent a long weekend in Newcastle a couple of years back and I couldn’t speak more highly of the city and the people there.’
‘Keep it tight, let them have the ball a bit, hit them on the break with wirtz supplying the front line quickly.’
‘Newcastle 1-3 Liverpool
Isak opener and a brace for Kerkez.’
‘This one could go any way. The preseason seems to have solved very little with unconvincing displays one after another . Newcastle fortunately for us seem to have suffered more than they deserve and losing Guimares is a big blow for them . Hoping for a win but not overly confident.’
‘They deserve to suffer.’
‘3 nil to Liverpool.’
‘2-2.
I think we’ll start well, go 2-0 up and then run out of steam and collapse in the second half.
I think that will be the story of most of our games until our fitness levels improve.’
‘I think we win this comfortably. 3-0 with a brace from Isak and one from Wirtz.’
‘0-2 – Isak. Dom.’
‘We will know very quickly if anything has changed from last year. Its a tricky place to go for a first game despite the fact that they have been decimated. The atmosphere will carry them through and we have to try and handle it. We had a habit last year of playing well then just imploding suddenly within games. We need to stop that this season. All in all I thought there were signs in pre season that we haven’t sorted out the spacing in midfield and there were gaps everywhere still. Defensively we look vulnerable too. But we do look better going forward. 2-2 draw for me.’
‘3-1 win with brace from Isak (both assisted by Wirtz) and set piece goal from Dom for good measure.’

‘I think everything can happen. I hope Isak doesn’t get injured in this game.’
‘I dont know why, but when I think of this fixture I just always think of Owen’s hattrick in the 4-1 in 98 (i think) and the rubbing hands thing. Not sure what that was about but the hattrick goal was just such a great finish with the outside of his boot.
I know no one likes him. But he was a heck of a finisher.’
‘No idea how this will go, much like our season.’
‘I was not looking forward to this that much until I went to Anfield last Sunday and saw our two new CBS playing so well, now I expect us to win 1-3.’
‘Don’t know what to expect in this first game. Knowing we are not yet fully coherent, and Iraola’s teams take time, Newcastle might be up for it etc……I can smell a loss.
But also can smell a 4-0.’
‘Sorry to ask, I didnt see it anywhere discussed in the thread but to save me just going down a google rabbit-hole: what happened at Newcastle? Why did Howe go? Did he feel he wasnt backed or something?’
‘I think we are gonna win’
‘Gonna be weird not celebrating a Salah opening day goal; heart says 0-3 heads says 0-3’
‘Going to be a emotional day too with tributes to Kevin Keegan.’

‘Can’t wait to get going, limited expectations first 6 games, but hoping to see some exciting football.’
‘Buzzing. And nervous. But buzzing
‘Yes, so excited to be back. 2-1 us.’
‘I will go 2-2.’
‘Easy win.’
‘I’d go Araujo and Munoz – looks like a game where a couple of dogs might be needed. 3-1 with an Isak brace I reckon.’
‘A little annoying we’re not playing on Saturday. Late Sunday times make me nervous.’
‘Always gonna be tough when you sell your best players 2 years on the trot, felt a little for Howe in that regard because you can’t build a house when the bricks in the foundation keep getting pulled and on their day Newcastle are a match for anyone.’
‘It’ll probably still be a tough game despite Newcastle’s challenges. We’ve a lot of uncertainties in our team so would imagine we’ll be inconsistent over the first few months of the season. ‘
‘Our first team can rival any in the EPL. We should win this 2-0.’
