Liverpool Get Their Man: Reds Seal Blockbuster £120m Bradley Barcola Deal

Fabrizio Romano has given the move his famous “Here we go”, reporting that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for the 23-year-old France international.

The initial fee is understood to be worth £100million, with add-ons potentially taking the overall package to around €140million (£120m). Documents are expected to be exchanged within the next 24 hours.

It represents a remarkable breakthrough after weeks of negotiations in which a deal had, at times, appeared extremely difficult to complete.

Earlier this month, Sky Sports reported that PSG valued Barcola at around £145m, leaving a significant gap between the clubs. However, Liverpool refused to walk away from one of their priority attacking targets and that persistence now looks to have paid off. Sky Sports has subsequently reported an agreement in principle worth £120m, although final details were still being discussed.

The Guardian and The Times have also reported a breakthrough between the clubs, with more than £100m guaranteed and the remainder of the package made up through add-ons.

For Andoni Iraola, Barcola could provide exactly the kind of explosive threat Liverpool have been searching for.

Quick, direct and devastating when given space to attack, the Frenchman is capable of playing across the frontline but has done some of his best work starting from the left.

His ability to isolate defenders before bursting beyond them should add another dimension to Iraola’s attack, while at 23, Liverpool are investing in a player whose best years should still be ahead of him.

There could also be consequences for the existing squad. Barcola’s arrival would create further competition for Cody Gakpo on the left, while Liverpool have also been exploring further wide additions as they reshape an attack following Mohamed Salah’s departure. 

Perhaps the most striking element of this deal is Liverpool’s persistence. PSG were initially demanding around £145m andBarcola was viewed as one of the hardest deals of the summer to complete.

Liverpool kept pushing. Now, barring any late complications during the final formalities, Iraola looks set to welcome one of European football’s most exciting wide forwards to Anfield.

After weeks of rumours, bids and negotiations, Liverpool finally have their man.
