Liverpool already have their Virgil van Dijk replacement.
What a colossus Van Dijk has been over the years for the Reds. There will likely never be a player like him.
The Dutchman has been one of the defining players of the club's modern era, transforming the defence after his arrival and becoming a leader both on and off the pitch. His presence has given Liverpool something every top team needs a defender that is unbeatable.
At his best, Van Dijk makes defending look remarkably simple. His positioning, reading of the game and ability to win duels allow him to deal with dangerous situations before they even become problems. He also has the pace and physicality to recover when things go wrong, while his passing ability allows Liverpool to build attacks from the back.
But perhaps his biggest value comes from his leadership.
Van Dijk has worn the captain's armband through some of Liverpool's most important moments and has become a calm, authoritative figure in the dressing room. That experience is particularly important when younger defenders are still finding their feet.
Liverpool can replace a centre-back statistically. Replacing Van Dijk's influence is far more difficult.
With the club undergoing another period of transition, his experience could prove crucial. He provides stability in a defence that has faced plenty of change, while his standards continue to set the benchmark for those around him.
For Liverpool, Van Dijk remains much more than just another defender.
If the Dutchman eventually leaves Liverpool, one of the biggest questions will be who takes over the captaincy.
Andoni Iraola has already named three vice-captains in Joe Gomez, Alisson Becker and Dominik Szoboszlai, which would appear to put those three at the front of the queue. However, there is an obvious complication.
Both Gomez and Alisson are entering the final year of their contracts just like Van Dijk, meaning their futures beyond next summer remain uncertain. If either leaves, Liverpool could quickly find themselves looking elsewhere for their next leader.
So, it's quite obvious what the plan is in terms of replacing Van Dijk as the club's captain.
Liverpool have already signed him - Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian has already established himself as an important figure within the squad and his influence has continued to grow. He also has the advantage of being tied down to a long-term contract.
Beyond those three, Liverpool could eventually look towards players such as Alexis Mac Allister or Ryan Gravenberch, depending on how their roles develop.
But Szoboszlai is by far and away the most logical successor. He is the one who stepped up at St James' Park to deliver an equaliser and he has a lot of experience leading his country at international level.
Speaking to reporters after the Newcastle game as per The Independent, Van Dijk backed the Hungarian to succeed him.
“Every leadership group is important. Obviously there is experience and there is someone in terms of Dom who has been the captain of his country, and that will only help him to be part of this group," Van Dijk said.
“He has to take responsibility to take that on his shoulders and it is going to benefit us also in the long run with Szoboszlai signing a new deal. He will be here to take over.”
With the current captain backing him to do so, it's quite obvious that the Reds already know how this is going to go.
Their Van Dijk replacement is already primed and ready to go in Szoboszlai.
