Luke Evangelista experienced a whirlwind of emotions this week as he was unexpectedly traded to the New Jersey Devils. Just as he was preparing to head to Nashville for the start of training camp, he received a call from his agent indicating that a trade might be imminent.
Shortly thereafter, the young winger found himself on the move to New Jersey, a transfer that involved the Devils acquiring him in exchange for two early-round draft picks. Reflecting on the sudden change, Evangelista remarked, "It’s been an absolute whirlwind couple of days. A little overwhelming, but these things happen and you have to believe it’s God’s plan -- I’m super excited to be coming to Jersey and playing for such an elite squad."
Upon arriving in New Jersey, Evangelista received a warm welcome from his new teammates. Among the players he is familiar with are Connor Brown and Jonathan Kovacevic, with whom he has trained, as well as Cody Glass, a former teammate from his time in Nashville. This familiarity may help ease his transition into the Devils' lineup.
Evangelista has already had conversations with General Manager Sunny Mehta and Head Coach Sheldon Keefe. Although they did not delve into specifics regarding his role on the team, the 22-year-old is confident that his skill set will complement the Devils' roster well. He stated, "Playmaking is what my game is built around. I take pride in making my linemates better and putting them in spots to succeed -- with the elite talent and hockey IQ in this lineup, I have a chance to blend well."
Last season, Evangelista showcased his playmaking abilities while playing in Nashville's top-six, achieving a career-high of 56 points, which included 44 assists. As he prepares for the upcoming season, he is focused on enhancing his goal-scoring capabilities. Evangelista noted, "I look around the league at the top players and I feel like offensively they’re all dual-threats. Playmaking I hit my stride and I pride myself on that, but I feel like becoming that dual-threat would just elevate my game."
Throughout his career, Evangelista has set a personal best of 16 goals, which he achieved during his first full professional season. As he joins the New Jersey Devils, he aims to build on his previous successes and contribute significantly to the team's efforts in the upcoming campaign.
