FACTORYVILLE, PA (WBRE/WYOU)— The Lackawanna Trail Field Hockey team is off to an impressive start this season, largely due to the standout performance of sophomore Lyla Ryon. In just her first two games, Ryon has already netted five goals, showcasing her talent and determination on the field.
Ryon's contributions extend beyond scoring; she is also known for her playmaking ability. During her freshman year, she led the team in both goals and assists, a performance that earned her an honorable mention in the all-state selections. Her early success is a testament to her dedication and skill, cultivated over many years of hard work.
From a young age, Ryon has been immersed in the sport, beginning her training in second grade. Her commitment to field hockey has seen her compete at levels above her age group, including representing the United States in international competitions. "When I was in the summer going into eighth grade, I got invited into the USA national camp, and that definitely boosted my confidence. I was on the U16 USA team as a U14 athlete," Ryon shared, reflecting on her experiences that have shaped her athletic journey.
Ryon has developed a strong rapport with her teammate Emma Thomas, which has been crucial for their on-field performance. Thomas emphasized the importance of trust in their partnership, stating, "Over the years, we just learned to trust each other. Trust is a big thing in sports. It’s just knowing when I hear her voice, I just know that what she is telling me to do is going to work out like I have no doubt when I have Lyla on the field." This chemistry is evident as they work together to create scoring opportunities for the Lions.
Head Coach Holly Colvin has witnessed Ryon's growth firsthand since she joined the team. "I can remember her playing in her backyard. So, she has always had a stick in her hand. You could tell she loved the sport from day one. For a freshman, it was beyond where you typically are," Colvin remarked, highlighting Ryon's innate talent and passion for field hockey.
The Ryon family's athletic prowess is noteworthy; Lyla's sister, Leena, ranks second in school history for goals scored, while her brother, Isaac, is making headlines on the football field by breaking multiple conference rushing records. Lyla credits her siblings for inspiring her own achievements, stating, "Growing up watching my two siblings definitely helped me a lot just watching me see what they could do and achieve things that they achieved definitely pushed me to be better or even as good as them."
The Lackawanna Trail Lions have their sights set on competing for district and state titles, aspirations that have not been realized since 2023, which coincided with Leena Thomas's senior season. With Lyla Ryon leading the charge, the team is optimistic about their chances this year.
Congratulations to Lyla Ryon, our 28/22 sports athlete of the week, for her outstanding contributions to the Lackawanna Trail Field Hockey team!
