Mahomet-Seymour girls flag football boasts bigger roster in 2026

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) -- After going 8-5 in its first year as a program, Mahomet-Seymour girls flag football has reason for optimism going in year two.

The Bulldogs have seen a bigger turnout for the sport this year, increasing the roster size from 28 to 40 players.

The team said they've made big progress since last season, and they're excited to continue that climb in 2026.

"It's very fun," Mahomet-Seymour senior wide receiver and linebacker Ava Watkins said. "We honestly did grow very close last year, and I think a successful year is just having fun." "It's a very new sport, so not all of us know all the terminology or anything, but it's fun to learn and grow into the sport."

"We only lost three seniors last year, so I feel like our team is still pretty deep, and I just think that the younger girls bring a lot of skill to our team too, so even after the seniors graduate, they'll still have potential to be really good," senior center and wide receiver Isabella Perez said.

"I feel like all of us got super close last year, so it was nice to bring back like 20 girls this year and a bunch of freshmen this year," senior running back and linebacker Erika Johnson said.

Mahomet-Seymour opens the season at Central on Tuesday, August 25.
