Manchester City boss leaves door open for Rodri’s Barcelona move: ‘Anything can happen’

Rodri’s future remains one of the biggest stories of the transfer window, and Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has refused to rule out the midfielder’s potential move to Barcelona.

The Spanish international returned to England and reported for Manchester City training despite the uncertainty surrounding his future. 

However, with Barcelona still working on a possible deal, Maresca made it clear that the situation could yet change before the transfer window closes.

Speaking about the ongoing speculation, the City manager was quoted by Fabrizio Romano as saying,

“The window transfer is open… we can buy players, we can sell, anything can happen.

“I’ve just seen Rodri. I gave him a big hug. He looks good. We’ll see what happens.”

Despite the rumours surrounding his future, Rodri fulfilled his commitment to Manchester City.

The midfielder had spent Thursday in Madrid waiting for clarity over a possible transfer and had hoped for permission to miss training if his situation progressed quickly. That did not happen.

With his scheduled training session still in place, Rodri travelled to England and reported back to the club.

The Spain international was approached about the possibility of joining Barcelona after arriving in England but chose not to comment on the speculation.

It is extremely important to note that his presence at Manchester City’s training ground does not necessarily close the door on a move.

Transfers can develop in a blink of an eye, particularly during the final stages of the window, and Maresca’s comments suggest that the club is not publicly ruling out further departures.

Barcelona’s interest in Rodri comes at a time when Manchester City are also working on their own midfield plans.

The Premier League club are pursuing Enzo Fernández, with negotiations taking place under significant time pressure as Chelsea have set a Friday deadline for an agreement.

That situation could potentially have an impact on Rodri’s future.

If Manchester City are able to secure another major midfield signing, the circumstances surrounding the Spaniard could change, especially after they have already rejected two bids from Barcelona.
