Manchester City completed the signing of promising goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday early in the summer transfer window. Charles was immediately sent out on loan to QPR to spend the 2026-27 season and gain further experience in the Championship. Pierce Charles started in goal for QPR in their 3-1 win over Portsmouth and his performance over the weekend showed that he is a player to keep an eye on throughout the 2026-27 season.

Manchester City’s on loan goalkeeper Pierce Charles made his second start of the season for QPR when they took on Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Charles made his debut for QPR in their penalty shootout defeat to Milwall in the first round of the Carabao Cup. That match finished 1-1 with Milwall winning the tie on penalties. Charles impressed in goal in his debut for QPR and he was at it again at Fratton Park.

What immediately jumped out about Pierce Charles’ performance for QPR in their 3-1 win over Portsmouth was his composure on the ball and range of passing. The Northern Ireland international played an important role in QPR’s build-up from the back. His long range passing was also extremely impressive. The ability of Charles to ping a long ball out wide or up the pitch is a standout skill in the young goalkeepers’ game. Once, Charles did give away possession in a dangerous area of the pitch but he quickly made amends with a smart double save. The composure Charles showed to reciver from his error was particularly impressive. In possession, Charles looks every bit a Manchester City goalkeeper in the making.

In goal, Pierce Charles commanded his area well and made the claims from crosses he needed to make. Charles made 5 saves across the match at Fratton Park. None were spectacular but they were solid saves that needed to be made. All told, Charles put in all-around impressive display.

Manchester City will be hoping that Pierce Charles continues to perform strongly for QPR this season.

Pierce Charles is only 21 years of age and looks to be a keeper of the future for Manchester City. Charles shone in difficult circumstances at Sheffield Wednesday. His performances there earned him a move back to Manchester City. Pierce Charles has had two strong displays in goal for QPR. The hope is that his impressive performances are the precursor to a strong season for him.
