Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Manchester United signed former Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba to a five-year contract, with a one-year option, the Red Devils announced Tuesday.
Sources told ESPN, Sky Sports and the BBC that the Red Devils will pay an initial fee of about $88.6 million, with another $6.8 million in potential add-ons. The pact can be extended to cover the 2031-32 campaign
"It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams," Baleba told ManUtd.com. "Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honor.
"I cannot wait to work with [coach] Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.
"The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together."
Baleba, 21, totaled four goals and two assists over 112 appearances for Brighton. The Cameroonian made his senior team debut at French Ligue 1 club Lille in 2022.
"Carlos has made a significant contribution during his time with us and we've seen him develop both as a player and person here," Brighton sporting director Mike Cave told the team website.
"When Carlos arrived he was a young player with huge potential and, through his own hard work and commitment together with the support of our coaches and staff, he has developed into an outstanding Premier League midfielder."
The Red Devils, who were upset by Hull on Saturday in their 2026-27 Premier League opener, will host Ipswich Town in their second match Sunday in Manchester, England. The game will kick off at 11:30 a.m. EDT at Old Trafford.
