Manuel Neuer helped Bayern Munich win the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund, thanks to a 2-1 win with goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise. The subplot of the season so far is whether or not Neuer will retire at the end of the season, by then Jonas Urbig will be the shoe-in for goalkeeper.
Speaking after the match, Neuer said he wants to enjoy the season but dropped a not-so-subtle hint about his future. “Now it’s time to enjoy this season with the team, and then we’ll see,” Neuer said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “But yes, it’s possible it will be the last.”
There had been a plethora of conflicting reports about Neuer’s future beyond 2027 before the season started, and like his response now he doesn’t want to commit to anything just yet. Neuer previously said he continued for one more season with the Bavarians because he believes the squad has a real chance of winning the treble.
