Veteran Marcus Mariota got the opportunity to start the Washington Commanders' first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins after coach Dan Quinn opted to sit the normal starter, Jayden Daniels.
Mariota didn't last long in the game, exiting the contest after four offensive snaps after suffering an apparent injury.
Mariota's injury occurred after he handed the ball to rookie running back Kaytron Allen on a first-and-10 from the Miami 47-yard line. The 32-year-old quarterback immediately came up lame despite not being touched on the play.
Mariota was met by athletic trainers on the field before eventually exiting the game. He was replaced by Sam Hartman and later was spotted walking to the locker room along with a member of the training staff.
The Commanders didn't immediately provide an update on Mariota's status.
Mariota is one of four quarterbacks on Washington's current roster along with Daniels, Hartman and seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. If Mariota can't return to Friday's game, Hartman and Kaliakmanis would split the remaining reps.
