MIAMI, Fla. – After a two-week absence, recovering from a Grade 1 hamstring strain, first baseman/outfielder Kyle Stowers is reportedly coming off the 10-day injured list, according to Fish on Firsts’ Isaac Azout.
In addition, Deyvison De Los Santos will be sent back to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A). He was called up ahead of Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals and started on Sunday. De Los Santos had one base hit in two at-bats. Although the Marlins could’ve opted to send down Leo Jimenez, his upside and defensive versatility keep him around.
Stowers last played on Aug. 9 against the Los Angeles Angels. He started the game, but left early in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stowers had two hits in four at-bats and two runs batted in.
It’s been an injury-riddled season for the one-time All-Star.
Before this season, Stowers suffered a left hamstring injury in spring training and didn’t play until April 19 against the Milwaukee Brewers. He had no setbacks until earlier this month. Stowers primarily served as an outfielder, switching shifts from left to right. However, in June, the 28-year-old began to play more at first base. It was a position need for the Marlins, which he has done decently well at fulfilling.
Stowers’ offense began to spark with power before being sidelined. In his last 16 games, he batted .305 with a 1.007 OPS, including 18 hits in 59 at-bats, four doubles, a triple, nine runs batted in, and four home runs. On Aug. 7, in the series opener against the Angels, Stowers had four hits in four at-bats and two runs batted in.
The Marlins regain a powerful lefty bat ahead of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. It’s a home series before a seven-game road trip against the Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals. The Marlins have managed to stick around the National League’s tight race for the last Wild Card spot, four games behind the San Diego Padres.
Stowers will likely reclaim first base upon returning ahead of Monday’s game. The Marlins opting to activate him immediately rather than a rehab assignment to Jacksonville suggests that he’s fully healthy and no risks present themselves.
Manager Clayton McCullough could start Stowers as a designated hitter and keep Griffin Conine or Jimenez at first base to avoid any setbacks. However, further details will likely be provided ahead of Monday’s series opener.
