Marlon Vera, a prominent figure in the UFC Bantamweight division, is making a notable change in his fight preparation as he gears up for UFC 331. The Ecuadorian fighter has decided to part ways with his longtime head coach Jason Parillo, a move that comes amid a challenging period in his career.

Vera, who is set to face rising contender Charles Jourdain on September 19, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, is currently experiencing the first four-fight losing streak of his professional career. His recent defeats have come against notable opponents, including Sean O’Malley, Deiveson Figueiredo, Aiemann Zahabi, and David Martinez. This troubling stretch has raised concerns about his future in the UFC, prompting Vera to seek a fresh approach.

Reflecting on his decision to move on from Parillo, Vera expressed the difficulty of the choice but emphasized the need for change. In an interview with Yahoo! Sports, he stated, "After the fight in Mexico, we went back to training, and I was trying to figure out what I needed — what wasn’t allowing me to win these close decisions. It was a hard decision because we didn’t have a problem [with each other]. Nothing bad happened."

Vera's last victory came in August 2023, when he secured a unanimous decision win over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292. Since then, he has struggled to find his rhythm in the octagon, leading him to question his training methods and overall strategy. He noted, "I didn’t want to let my career get to the very end and then question myself: ‘What would have happened if I made a change?’”

Despite the amicable nature of their split, Vera recognized the emotional weight of the decision. He shared, "Making changes is hard. You don’t want to tell people you love or who have a big spot in your heart, ‘Hey, I’m going to move forward for now and see what I can do.’ It was a hard decision, but all I can do is try.”

Vera and Parillo began their partnership in 2018, during which time Vera achieved significant milestones, including knockout victories over high-profile fighters like O’Malley, Frankie Edgar, and Dominick Cruz. Their collaboration culminated in Vera challenging O’Malley for the Bantamweight championship at UFC 299. However, recent performances have not reflected the success they once enjoyed.

As he prepares for this crucial matchup against Jourdain, Vera has shifted his training environment. He is now working closely with 21-year-old Bantamweight prospect Raul Rosas Jr. at his personal gym, with Rosas’ father overseeing the training regimen. This new setup aims to reinvigorate Vera’s approach and enhance his performance in the octagon.

With the stakes high for Vera, a fifth consecutive loss could jeopardize his standing in the UFC. His upcoming fight against Jourdain, who has been on a winning streak since moving to Bantamweight, presents a significant challenge. As Vera embarks on this new chapter in his career, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if this change in coaching will yield the desired results.
