COLLEGE PARK, MD - As the fall sports season gains momentum, the University of Maryland hosted its annual fall sports media day at Tyser Tower. This event brought together coaches and student-athletes from various teams, including football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, cross country, and wrestling, to engage with reporters and discuss their expectations for the upcoming season.
The highlight of the media day was the press conference for the Maryland Terrapins football team, which featured head coach Mike Locksley and quarterback Malik Washington. Locksley opened the session by outlining his immediate goals for the team as they prepare for their season opener on Saturday.
Locksley emphasized the importance of establishing a strong running game, maintaining discipline to avoid penalties, and executing effectively across all three phases of the game. He stated, “Establish the ability to run the football in a game like this. I want us to play clean. I’d love to see us come out of this thing penalty-free. And last but not least, I would say execute at a high level in all three phases.” This focus on fundamentals reflects the team's desire to improve upon their previous seasons, which ended with disappointing 4-8 records.
When pressed about his long-term goals for the season, Locksley remained focused on the immediate challenge ahead, stating he is concentrating solely on the first week of competition. This approach indicates a desire to build confidence and momentum before addressing broader season objectives. Washington, on the other hand, provided a straightforward perspective on what success looks like for the Terrapins this year: “Finish and win games.”
In addition to football, Maryland’s volleyball team faced a setback, losing to Vanderbilt in straight sets. This loss adds to the challenges the volleyball program is currently facing as they look to gain traction in their season.
On a positive note, the Maryland football program announced its captains for the upcoming game, highlighting the leadership within the team. The chosen captains for week one are Malik Washington, Daniel Wingate, and Bryce McFerson. Their leadership will be crucial as the team aims to turn the tide this season.
In other sports news, the Maryland men’s soccer team celebrated individual accolades as Rodrigo Neri was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week following his game-winning goal against High Point. Additionally, Laurin Mack received recognition as the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week after delivering a standout performance that included a clean sheet and six saves in the same match. The men’s soccer team’s victory over then-No. 9 High Point also propelled them to the No. 2 ranking in the nation, a significant achievement that underscores their strong start to the season.
