Initially, Bayern Munich’s preseason was set to end last weekend, with the Telekom Cup friendly against Rasenballsport Leipzig in the Allianz Arena. But, upon some reconsideration, it was decided that the team needed another friendly. So the Bavarians organized a friendly between the Leipzig game and the Franz Beckenbauer-Supercup against Borussia Dortmund on the weekend, finally finding FC Heidenheim as a willing opponent.
But why was this friendly so necessary? Speaking after the 4-2 win over the 2. Bundesliga team, Bayern Munich executive Max Eberl explains, via Bayern’s official website.
“It was a game in which we could further develop our rhythm. Every minute is good for us. The game was beneficial for us; the young players were able to learn, and the established players were able to gain some playing time,” said the sporting director of FC Bayern. “We completed our preseason well, played some good games, and achieved good results. We did many things well, but we also realized that we need to work on our physicality and become even fresher.”
Now the goal is to freshen up and prepare for the match against Dortmund for the first trophy of the season.
