As the fall season unfolds, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder volleyball team is poised to make a significant impact in the NDHSAA Class B volleyball landscape. Head coach Jacie Connell expressed her excitement about the season, emphasizing her passion for coaching and the dedication of her players. "I live for these months getting to be in the gym with my girls every day and to be able to watch them work so hard and chase their dreams," Connell stated.
The Thunder kicked off their season with a competitive showing at the Northern Cass Tournament, where they achieved three wins, one tie, and one loss. This performance sets a promising tone as they prepare for their first Class B Region 1 match against Barnes County North on September 3, with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m. in Pingree.
This year, the program attracted an impressive turnout, with 55 girls in grades 7-12 vying for a spot on the roster. Connell shared her enthusiasm for the tryout process, noting, "It really shows me who has put in the work over the summer and offseason. We have such a competitive program, so it’s fun to see the girls compete and work hard to earn their spot." The commitment and talent of the players have created a highly competitive environment, fostering a strong team dynamic.
Last season, the Thunder made history by advancing to their second-ever state tournament, following a thrilling victory over Linton/Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in the Region 1 championship match. The team showcased their skills at the NDHSAA Class B State Volleyball Tournament, making it all the way to the championship match before falling to Langdon Area/Edmore-Munich in a tightly contested 3-2 battle.
While the Thunder will miss the contributions of Brynn Sorenson, the 2025 Senior Athlete of the Year, they are set to benefit from the return of Violet Bohl, a standout setter and fourth-year starter. Bohl had an impressive season last year, tallying 1,147 assists, 514 digs, 61 kills, and 36 aces. Her career totals of 3,086 assists and 1,154 digs highlight her importance to the team's success. Connell praised Bohl's development, stating, "She has grown so much as a player over the offseason. She is smart, so competitive, and she has so much drive to be the best. She is the heart and soul of our team."
In addition to Bohl, the Thunder will rely on outside hitter Destiny Opp, who is expected to be a key offensive weapon this season. Connell described Opp as having a "deadly swing with so much power" and noted her consistency and work ethic. The back row will also be fortified by the experience of senior libero Marly Hoffmann, who has shown significant growth and confidence over the summer.
Connell emphasized the team's defensive capabilities, pointing to a scrappy group of defensive specialists and blockers ready to challenge opponents' attacks. The Thunder's high energy and positive attitude are expected to be critical factors in their pursuit of success this season.
As the team prepares for a challenging schedule, Connell's enthusiasm for the program is palpable. "This is such a close team on and off the court, and it shows. Our goal is to get back to state and win a state title. These girls have the mindset and talent to do it. We want it so badly, and we are willing to do whatever it takes to get back in that state title match," she concluded. With the season underway, the Thunder are eager to chase their championship dreams once again.
