The vision for a professional soccer stadium in Melbourne, Florida, has taken a major step forward with a recent land acquisition. Stadelon District Holdings, LLC, has purchased approximately 54 acres of wooded property from the Melbourne Airport Authority for just over $9 million. This transaction, which closed on September 2, 2023, is pivotal for the proposed 8,000-seat stadium intended for the United Soccer League (USL).
Greg Donovan, the executive director of the Melbourne Airport, expressed optimism about the sale, highlighting the potential benefits of a professional soccer venue and mixed-use development in the area. He stated, "We are excited about the new owners’ vision for the property and the potential for a professional soccer stadium and mixed-use development to bring new activity to the area." The development is expected to attract visitors from outside the region, contributing to the local economy and increasing passenger traffic for the Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
The proposed stadium is part of a broader initiative led by founders of Orlando City SC, who aim to establish a Space Coast professional men's soccer club set to compete in the USL by March 2028. The site, located off the south side of NASA Boulevard, is strategically positioned to serve the community and provide a venue for a variety of events beyond soccer.
City officials in Melbourne are currently reviewing the site plan and a conditional-use permit that would allow for outdoor recreation in a light-industrial zoning district. The Melbourne City Council will play a crucial role in the approval process for the complex, which is set to include approximately 55,000 square feet of development, featuring retail spaces, restaurants, bars, and other consumer-oriented outlets.
According to a detailed business plan submitted to City Hall, the stadium is projected to host up to 27 regular-season and playoff matches per year, along with U.S. Open Cup matches and preseason friendlies. Additionally, the venue could accommodate high school and college matches, as well as other sports events, music concerts, and community gatherings. Mayor Paul Alfrey emphasized the importance of ensuring that the project benefits the local community, particularly youth soccer programs, stating, "One of my priorities throughout this process has been making sure this project benefits our community — especially our youth."
Donovan noted that the 54-acre property had not previously generated revenue for the airport. Past development plans for the site, including a resort-style destination featuring a manmade Crystal Lagoon, had garnered attention but ultimately did not come to fruition. The current initiative represents a renewed effort to revitalize the area and provide a much-needed sports facility.
Leading the executive team for the Space Coast Pro Soccer initiative are John Bonner, a co-founder of Orlando City SC, and Adrian Heath, who previously coached the team to two USL championships. Their experience and vision are expected to play a significant role in the successful establishment of the soccer club and stadium in Melbourne.
