Mets’ bats, bullpen lead way to secure ‘gritty, gutsy’ win over White Sox

It wasn’t pretty, but it certainly was gritty.

The Mets scored 10 runs on the south-side of Chicago Saturday night, homering five times, as they held on to take the middle-game of a weekend set with the White Sox, 10-5.

Two of those five long balls came off the bat of Luis Robert Jr, who received more boos from his old hometown fans playing in just his second game back against his former team.

Carson Benge also stayed hot with a homer of his own as part of a three-hit effort, gutting it out after having a bit of a scare on a collision with the outfield fence

Bo Bichette and Luis Torrens continued to roll at the plate with the other two marks.

All in all, every Met except star shortstop Francisco Lindor reached base safely on the night as they totaled two walks and a whopping 16 hits against Chicago’s pitching.

“The offense had some good swings,” interim manager Andy Green said. “Happy for Luis Robert to come here and put two swings on balls, that’s got to feel great, above that we got some good contributions off the bench as well.”

On the pitching side of things, Christian Scottwasn’t exactly thrilled with his outing, but he was able to get some big outs to keep Chicago’s offense at bay along the way.

The bullpen also did a tremendous job stepping up behind him with Jonathan Pintaro, Austin Warren, Dedniel Nunez, and Kodai Senga dancing around trouble of their own to allow just one run across the final 4.1 innings.

The new-look bullpen just continues to shine following the trade deadline.

“It was just a gritty, gusty win,” Green said. “That’s a good offense over there, they put themselves in a lot of good positions to score and we got some big outs -- just an overall good night for our guys.”

The Mets have been pretty good at stacking those good nights of late.

They are now a strong 11-6 so far in August, and will look to secure their fifth series win of the month with Nolan McLean on the mound Sunday afternoon
