New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor backed rookie reliever Jefry Yan’s animated celebrations Tuesday following a 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field.
Yan entered the ninth inning with runners on second and third and one out after Milwaukee had tied the game. He struck out Garrett Mitchell and then walked Joey Ortiz, loading the bases with two outs. David Hamilton then lined Yan’s sinker toward left field, but Lindor made a diving backhand catch to end the threat. Yan responded by pounding the turf in celebration.

Lindor’s endorsement followed the southpaw’s tough outing Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Yan began celebrating what he believed was strike three against Colson Montgomery, but the pitch was called a ball. Montgomery eventually walked, and Jake Rogers hit a two-run walk-off homer that gave Chicago a 6-4 victory.
Yan acknowledged afterward that he needed to wait until the play was complete before celebrating. Lindor’s comments supported the rookie’s personality while leaving room for him to learn from the mistake.
Yan spent four years outside professional baseball following a serious elbow injury. He worked in roofing and home delivery while training to resume his career, eventually returning to professional baseball and making his major league debut on August 5.
New York won Tuesday when the Mets infielder scored from second as the automatic runner in the 10th. Hamilton’s throw home on Christopher Morel’s grounder sailed wide, helping the club to improve to 60-72.
Lindor’s defense, winning run, and support for Yan paired his performance with a message about preserving individuality while learning from mistakes.
