MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for their season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 11, and head coach Jeff Hafley took the opportunity to address the media on September 3. This press conference marked the final day before a three-day break for the team, allowing players to recharge ahead of the highly anticipated matchup.

One of the standout topics during Hafley's meeting with reporters was the impressive transition of D.J. Herman, who has successfully moved from linebacker to fullback. Hafley highlighted Herman's intelligence on the field, noting, "He’s a smart football player and he was able to pick up the offense fairly quickly." The coach emphasized that Herman's physicality and lateral movement have been key assets in his new role. "I give him a lot of credit. He worked really hard," Hafley added, underscoring the effort Herman has put into adapting to the demands of fullback.

In addition to discussing player transitions, Hafley addressed the topic of injuries within the team. He explained that he is required to submit an injury report to the league every Wednesday, which is subsequently updated on Thursdays and Fridays. "If I don’t have to reveal anything, I will wait till the deadline to reveal it," Hafley stated, indicating a strategic approach to injury management as the season approaches.

Another notable mention was Malik Willis, whose calm demeanor has caught Hafley's attention. The coach remarked, "It’s one of the things that drew me to him. He’s got this cool demeanor about him where guys kind of gravitate to him." This quality could prove beneficial as the Dolphins look to establish a strong team dynamic heading into the season.

The Dolphins will face the Raiders, who have decided to start veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins over rookie Fernando Mendoza. Hafley acknowledged this development, saying, "It’s kind of what we figured would happen, so now we’ll game plan for him." This insight into the game plan reflects the team's preparation and adaptability as they approach their first game.

Defensive players have also set a goal for themselves, stating they will run after practice if they fail to create three takeaways in a game. Hafley expressed enthusiasm for this initiative, saying, "I think it’s awesome. ... I like the number that they picked, three." This commitment to performance highlights the team's competitive spirit as they strive for success on the field.

As the Dolphins prepare for the upcoming season, the announcement of team captains is on the horizon, with players having already cast their votes. Hafley confirmed that the results have yet to be counted, adding an element of anticipation to the team's leadership structure.

Furthermore, Hafley praised defensive lineman Jordan Phillips, stating that he often goes unrecognized for his contributions. "He does the grunt work of keeping offensive linemen occupied to free up the linebackers to make tackles," Hafley noted. He also shared insights into Phillips' work ethic, mentioning that while some players plan to spend their weekend off with family or watching college games, Phillips is likely to be found in the sauna at 5 a.m., lifting weights. "He just doesn’t stop," Hafley remarked, highlighting Phillips' dedication to his craft.

As the Dolphins move forward, the team's focus remains on building chemistry and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead in the 2023 NFL season.
