As the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team gears up for the 2026 season, all eyes will be on junior quarterback Micah Balzarini, who is poised to make his college debut this Saturday against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at East Campus Stadium in Troy, New York. Balzarini, who has spent two years developing his skills with the Engineers, is ready to take the reins of a team that is eager to reclaim the Liberty League title they last won in 2021.
Balzarini's journey to RPI is notable. He attended Puyallup High School in Washington, a school known for producing NFL quarterbacks, including Billy Joe Hobert and the Huard brothers, Brock and Damon. After backing up and then succeeding Luke Holcomb at Puyallup, Balzarini transferred to Blair Academy in New Jersey, which has a strong football tradition. His decision to join RPI was influenced by the school's academic reputation and its competitive football program.
In preparation for his starting role, Balzarini has demonstrated his capabilities during a rigorous spring practice and training camp. RPI head coach Ralph Isernia expressed confidence in Balzarini's abilities, noting his calm demeanor in the pocket and strong command of the offense. I think the team's in a really good spot. I believe in our athletes. It’s my job just to be the point guard and get the good guys the ball and let them do their thing."
Support for Balzarini comes from his teammates, including senior tight end Josh Young, who was a first-team all-league selection last season. Young expressed his confidence in Balzarini, stating, "He’s the starter for a reason. I’m confident in him. We’re all behind him." Young, who caught six touchdown passes last year, will be a key target for Balzarini, along with senior running back Kayden White, who rushed for 1,019 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2025.
