Michael Skubala, the manager of Bristol City, has expressed hope that a recent joint statement regarding captain Jason Knight will quell the ongoing speculation about the player's future with the club. Knight, who has been a pivotal figure for the Robins, was rumored to be on the move during the summer transfer window, but ultimately, no transfer took place.
The 25-year-old midfielder and Bristol City issued a joint statement after the closure of the transfer window, revealing that they could not reach an agreement on a contract extension. Knight's current deal is set to expire next summer, which had led to concerns among fans about his long-term future at the club.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, the club confirmed that Knight would continue to serve as captain. Skubala emphasized the importance of moving forward and concentrating on the upcoming season. When asked if the statement had resolved the situation, he replied, “I hope so.”
Skubala further elaborated on the club's commitment to transparency, stating, “I think myself, James and Charlie, we want to make sure we’re being really transparent about how we do things. I think hopefully the fans will have seen that and hopefully people outside have really appreciated the transparency, but Jason is a top player. He’s my captain, he’s been great, and he’s really committed to the club.”
In the same statement, Sporting Director James Ellis acknowledged Knight's aspirations to compete at the highest level. However, Skubala believes this ambition is not unique to Knight but is shared by the entire Bristol City squad. “Every player wants that,” he noted, emphasizing that the collective goal of the team is to achieve promotion to the Premier League.
Skubala added, “Everybody in this club is trying to help this club get to the Premier League. That’s from staff, that’s from the academy staff who are supporting players, that’s from all the commercial staff that are trying to fill the stadium. We’re all invested in the same thing and, of course, all the players are. Jason’s like everyone.”
As Bristol City prepares for the rest of the season, the focus will be on harnessing the talents of players like Knight, who remains a key part of the team's aspirations. With the club's commitment to transparency and a united goal of reaching the Premier League, the future looks promising for both Knight and Bristol City.
