ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan Wolverines have always been a talented team, year-in, year-out, and yet, this season, many across college football are simply looking at the last two years and not looking at the overall talent level in Ann Arbor. However, if you ask some of the newcomers to the Michigan football team, they'll tell you: talent is not an issue for the maize and blue.
Take, for instance, safety Chris Bracy. Bracy comes aboard from Memphis via UAB. Named the starter opposite Rod Moore by Kyle Whittingham at Big Ten media days, Bracy has been able to hang with his new team in spring ball and fall camp thus far. But one thing he cannot get over upon arriving is just how much talent there is surrounding him in Ann Arbor compared to some of his previous stops.
"It's amazing. Most talent I've been around in my football career, just on both sides of the ball and defense," Bracy said. "There's a lot of playmakers on this team that I feel like you're going to see this fall."
It's no surprise that Michigan has more talent than Memphis or UAB, or even Utah -- where Whittingham and Michigan sophomore wide receiver JJ Buchanan were last year.
While the Utes might not have more talent on paper, they've tended to upend so many teams that have come against them, regardless of recruiting rankings. Whittingham has always managed to get more out of less, so the big offseason question has been what if he can do more with more?
Buchanan says that, despite Utah having lost just two games last year, this team he's now a part of has more talent than his former group.
"We have all the talent in the world," Buchanan said. "Probably the most talented team I've been a part of. Obviously, I've only been a part of one other collegiate program, but this is the most talented team I've ever been a part of, and I'm excited to see what we all can do together."
We'll see if these Wolverines will be able to take advantage of having a coaching staff and transfers who could take advantage of their situation. It all starts on September 5 against Western Michigan at The Big House.
