The New England Patriots, searching for good news on Christian Gonzalez returning, saw him at practice on Monday. For a Patriots team looking to win a Super Bowl, this is very promising news for more reasons than just that. Gonzalez, in the middle of a contract standoff, has yet to truly sit out of camp.
When he hasn't played over the past few weeks, it's been because he's been injured. The superstar corner hasn't once suggested he doesn't want to play in New England or isn't willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win this year.
While the contract situation remains uncertain, it's promising to see Gonzalez healthy.
At the same time, there's no guarantee that he's going to be ready for Week 1, with head coach Mike Vrabel recently speaking about whether he's ready to make a decision on him just yet.
“I’m going to focus on today,” Vrabel said of Gonzalez, per the Boston Globe’s Nicole Yang. “I’m not ready to talk about Week 1.”
A lot has to play out for Gonzalez and the Patriots over the next few weeks before the regular season starts.
Returning on Monday, Gonzalez will probably need a couple of days to really ramp up before he gets into the full swing of things.
His contract is another factor that could come into play over the next few weeks. He doesn't seem like he's ready to sit out and miss games if he doesn't have a new deal, but this is the NFL, and anything is truly on the table.
