Mike Vrabel gives injury update on Patriots star CB Christian Gonzalez

Christian Gonzalez still isn't ready to return to practice, according to New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel on Saturday.

It was reiterated by Vrabel that Gonzalez's absence is not contract-related. The star cornerback is currently dealing with an injury that is believed to have happened late in Monday's practice.

There have been concerns that Gonzalez was taking his contract-negotiating tactics to another level. The sides have been discussing an extension that could make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. However, they have yet to come to an agreement at the midway point in August.

Vrabel remains confident that Gonzalez will be available for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks if healthy.

Mike Vrabel on Christian Gonzalez:

"Nope I don't think I would expect Christian. He is not ready to get back out there and practice yet."

Gonzalez has missed 17 games over three seasons due to previous injuries.

He is one of the best players on the team, and the defense is significantly better when he's in the backfield. The Patriots have a big week of practice next week, with the Philadelphia Eagles visiting for two joint training camp sessions.

They'd obviously love to have Gonzalez on the field for those practices.
