Arsenal begin the defence of their Premier League title on Friday night, and Mikel Arteta already has an early selection issue to manage.
Bruno Guimaraes has emerged as an injury concern ahead of the meeting with newly promoted Coventry City after being seen with ice strapped to his right thigh. It may ultimately prove to be little more than precautionary treatment, but the timing inevitably raises questions given Arsenal’s opening fixture is now so close.
For Arteta, the positive is that his midfield options remain considerably stronger than they once were.
Guimaraes Fitness Remains UncertainThe sight of Guimaraes receiving treatment understandably caused some concern, particularly given how central the Brazilian has become to Arsenal’s midfield structure.
Asked about his availability on Thursday, Mikel Arteta offered encouragement without guaranteeing the midfielder would feature.
“Let’s see how he is. He’s evolving really well but let’s see for tomorrow.”

That leaves Arsenal facing a late decision over whether Guimaraes should be risked against Coventry or whether the club can afford to give him additional recovery time.
There should be little need for unnecessary gambling at this stage of the season. Arsenal have ambitions across multiple competitions, and keeping Guimaraes available over the long term matters considerably more than squeezing another appearance from him in August.
Arsenal Midfield Depth Offers Arteta OptionsGuimaraes missing out would still leave Arteta with several credible alternatives.
Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice are both capable of operating alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly, giving Arsenal a range of combinations depending on how Arteta wants his side to approach the match.
Rice offers power, defensive security and the ability to carry possession through midfield. Zubimendi provides greater control and positional discipline, particularly when Arsenal are attempting to dominate possession against opponents defending in a compact shape.
Arteta has also confirmed that Rice and Bukayo Saka are available.
“They are ready to be involved,” the Gunners boss added.
That should provide Arsenal with significant reassurance heading into their first Premier League fixture. Any concern surrounding Bruno Guimaraes becomes easier to manage when so many established players remain available.
Timber Recovery Still Requires PatienceJurrien Timber represents a longer term concern.
The defender has not appeared for Arsenal since coming off the bench during the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint Germain on penalties in May. Before that appearance, Timber had been out since suffering an injury during the 2-0 victory over Everton on March 14.
His rehabilitation remains ongoing.
“I said in the next few weeks,” Arteta explained. “He’s not trained with the group yet.”
That places further importance on Arsenal’s defensive depth. Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera have already shared responsibilities at right back during Timber’s absence, while Ezri Konsa is expected to provide another option once his £51million transfer from Aston Villa is completed.
Squad Strength Reduces Opening Night PressureArsenal’s position ahead of Coventry therefore looks relatively healthy.
Guimaraes remains a doubt rather than a confirmed absentee, while Rice and Saka are available and Arteta has genuine alternatives across midfield. Timber’s absence is more substantial, although Arsenal have prepared for that situation through existing options and further recruitment.
For a side beginning the season as defending Premier League champions, squad depth will be tested repeatedly.
Friday night’s team selection may offer the first indication of how Arteta intends to manage those resources.
