MILAN – In an impressive display of skill and talent, German exchange student Livius Guellmeister made a sensational debut for Milan High School's soccer team on August 31. Guellmeister's remarkable performance included scoring four goals in a commanding 9-1 victory against Airport, showcasing his potential to be a significant asset for the Big Reds this season.
"It was a wonderful debut," remarked Milan coach Phil Hayes. Guellmeister, who arrived in the United States just days before the match, bonded with his new teammates over the weekend, which seemed to translate into immediate on-field chemistry. Hayes had been aware of Guellmeister's impending arrival but could not integrate him into the team until after the Big Reds had already played their first five games of the season.
Guellmeister's performance was not only impressive but pivotal, as he accounted for nearly half of his team's goals in the match. Alongside him, Robert Gill contributed one goal, while goalkeeper Wyatt Hurd stepped out of his usual role to successfully convert a penalty kick. Other goals for the Big Reds came from Tanner Lambers and Andrew Cruz, further solidifying their offensive dominance.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the match began with a surprising twist when Airport struck first. Adam Ortega capitalized on a pass from freshman Wyatt Sanders, scoring just 30 seconds into the game. Coach Hayes acknowledged the early goal as a wake-up call for his team, stating, "That definitely caught us off guard. Sometimes you need a wake-up call." Unfortunately for the young Jets, the initial momentum did not carry through the match.
Airport's coach, Nick Suarez, expressed the challenges his team faces this season, noting the significant turnover from last year. "We graduated 11 seniors from last year’s team, which had our best record. It’s tough to lose that many," he explained. The Jets currently have a roster of only 11 players, which has made it difficult for them to maintain consistent performance throughout the match. Suarez added, "This was a 2-1 game through the first 25 minutes. With our lack of depth, we are not an 80-minute team right now. We knew this year would be rough."
In addition to Guellmeister's standout performance, other players across the Monroe County region also made headlines on August 31. Carson Welker from SMCC scored three goals and provided an assist in a 7-0 victory over Flat Rock. New Boston Huron's Nathan Seisdedos-Henninger led his team with two goals in another 7-0 win against Jefferson-Erie Mason, while Trey Heaton from State Line Christian opened his season with a hat trick in an 8-0 triumph over Pittsford Freedom Christian.
Meanwhile, in volleyball, Erie Mason's Addie Homrich excelled with 13 kills in a closely contested match against Summerfield, which the team won 3-1. The performance of these athletes highlights the competitive spirit and talent present in the Monroe County sports scene as the season progresses.
