Fans were left dazed and confused by a controversial call during Game 2 between the Orioles and Yankees in Baltimore, which ruled Pete Alonso’s potential go-ahead home run a foul ball, even after an on-field review. Alonso crushed the ball into the left-field stands, and it clearly appeared to be to the right of the foul pole and should have been called fair.

Much to the home fans’ surprise, the umpiring crew missed the call. The review failed to overturn the decision, ruling it a foul ball and leaving the home dugout and the Orioles fans perplexed. Ultimately, the game continued, and the visitors scored two runs in the eighth, took a 5-3 lead, and won.

Fans reacted quickly to the controversial call on social media, with many criticizing the league and the umpiring crew, and some even implying that officials favored the Yankees.

“Yeah, MLB is rigging the game right in front of us,” one fan commented.

Alonso finished the game 1-for-4, including a one-run home run. Dylan Beavers also crushed a solo shot, but the Bombers’ offense did just enough to see this one through.

Pete Alonso Clearly Thought He Had Hit a Go-Ahead HR in the 7th

Alonso responded to media questions in the Oriole clubhouse after the game. He was mainly asked about the foul call on his potential go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and whether he thought it would be overturned after the review.

“Yeah, 100%. I mean, just based on the video. Also, the Hawkeye had it fair in the dugout; there was, looking at the video, the view from where the camera was pointing straight down the line. From what it looked like, I mean, it was to the right of the yellow and the pole. So I thought it was fair,” Alonso said.

“But what I was told is that in order to overturn a call, you need to have two camera angles to confirm it… It is what it is… Obviously, that’s a really defining call in the game. But you have to win adversity in his face. You’ve got to push past it and move through it,” he added.

Alonso is having a stellar campaign with the Birds, batting .267 with 29 home runs, 82 RBIs, and an .857 OPS in 127 games. He is projected to hit 36 home runs and 105 RBIs this year, even as Baltimore (61-66) struggles to reach the .500 winning percentage.

After completing the intra-divisional series against New York, the Orioles conclude their six-game homestand by hosting the TB Rays for another intra-divisional series.
