With head coaches across the country announcing their starting quarterbacks ahead of the 2026 season, Maryland football fans will recognize a name very fondly. Billy Edwards Jr., a three-year quarterback with the Terps, was named the starter at North Carolina.

Edwards appeared in 26 games during his time at Maryland, notably starting throughout the 2024 season. He ranked third in the Big Ten in passing yards per game (261.9) and totaled 20 touchdowns — 15 passing and five rushing — that season.
But with the arrival of Malik Washington in College Park, Edwards exited the program and transferred to Wisconsin. He immediately became the Badgers’ starter before an injury in the season opener derailed his campaign. Edwards later returned to start against Maryland in the Big Ten opener, but played limited snaps before sitting out the remainder of the season.
The dual-threat quarterback will look to revive a North Carolina program that won just four games during Bill Belichick’s first season at the helm. At his fourth college in six years, Edwards beat out Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill and freshman Travis Burgess for the starting job.
