Montez Sweat explains how Bears RT Darnell Wright has made him better

The veterans on the Chicago Bears understand that great talent helps each other out and the competition between great players is what will make them a better team in the long run, which is part of Ben Johnson's vision for long-term success.

Two of the top veterans on the team play opposite of one another in edge rusher Montez Sweat and right tackle Darnell Wright, and Sweat recently discussed how going up against the newly-extended Wright is helping him. Right as training camp was in full swing, the Bears signed Wright to a 4-year, $116 million extension, as he has continued to develop as a star on the offensive line.

Wright has also brought a great level of competition for Sweat, who recently discussed how going against Wright has made him a better player and how he has grown as a player coming into this season.

"The strides that Darnell has made — his technique, work ethic, just the way he goes around the building — is tremendous from when I got here to where he’s at now," Sweat said. "I don’t think I’ve beaten him in a 1-on-1 rep yet, honestly. It started off with me making him better, now it’s the other way around. He’s making me better.”

It is a glowing report for Wright, but also a notice for Sweat to continue to work to elevate his game as a pass rusher, being tested by the best level of opposition he can face. Having Wright an anchor on the right side of the offensive line also helps the unit as a whole, and the unit as a group is what led to a lot of the turnaround for the Bears' success last year.
