The Florida A&M Rattlers football program is facing a significant hurdle regarding the potential return of former linebacker Nay'Ron Jenkins. Initially, fans were optimistic when head coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr. announced in August that Jenkins would be back on the field after the NCAA introduced the "5-for-5" eligibility rule.
This new regulation allows college athletes to have five years of eligibility while eliminating the redshirting process, enabling 2022 high school graduates like Jenkins to potentially play a fifth season. However, recent developments have cast doubt on Jenkins' return. A panel from the United States 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the NCAA a stay, effectively halting the Colorado injunction that had previously allowed blanket fifth-year eligibility for 2022 graduates.
The pushback from the NCAA stems from concerns over NFL rookies attempting to re-enter college programs after being released from professional teams. This situation has created a complex landscape for student-athletes looking to extend their college careers, and Jenkins now finds himself in a precarious position.
While awaiting clarity on his eligibility, Jenkins has been working as a graduate defensive assistant for the Rattlers, all while pursuing a master's degree in Sport Management. He had been ramping up his training in preparation for a return to the field as the Rattlers approached the start of their season.
In a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat, Gray expressed the current predicament: "The NCAA has put a halt on that, so right now he’s not eligible to play unless he does some type of legal action. Right now, he’s not interested in coming out of pocket for that type of stuff, so he’ll return to his graduate assistant position until something happens." This statement highlights the challenges Jenkins faces as he navigates his future in college football.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Jenkins, the Rattlers opened their season on a positive note, securing a 20-7 victory against Albany State on August 29 at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The win marked a strong start for the team, which is now preparing for its next challenge.
Looking ahead, the Rattlers (1-0) are set to face the defending Celebration Bowl and Black College Football National Champions, South Carolina State (1-0), in the Orange Blossom Classic on Sunday, September 6. The matchup will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game being broadcast on ESPNU. This game presents an opportunity for FAMU to establish itself early in the season, even as they deal with the uncertainty surrounding Jenkins' eligibility.
