Lonzo Ball’s NBA career is quickly turning into a what-if story. Ball had been emerging as a winning player to start the 2020s, and he played a huge role in leading the Chicago Bulls back to the playoffs during the 2021-22 NBA season. However, Ball ran into seemingly nonstop knee issues which kept him out of action for two full seasons, and his career was never the same.
In fact, Ball looked washed during the 2025-26 season, suiting up in just 35 games (three starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers before the Cavs pulled the plug on the Ball experiment. With the Cavs, Ball shot a ghastly 30.1 percent from the field, and upon arriving with the Utah Jazz in a salary dump prior to the 2025 NBA trade deadline, he was waived. He hasn’t been on an NBA team since.
Now that Ball is staring at the legitimate possibility that his NBA career is over, he looked back at some of the regrets he has for how the start of his career went, when his father, LaVar, was the driving force behind all of his decisions behind the scenes.

“I had no structure, bro. I literally was just hooping and following my pops, listening to my pops. We had the (Big Baller Brand) going. … I never went to any Nike deal, no Adidas deal. I never heard no offers or nothing. I was not part of that s**t. I was just doing what I was told really. I guess that would be my one regret, like taking control of my career earlier,” Ball said in an appearance on Michael Porter Jr.’s “Curious Mike” podcast.
Ball was indeed rocking BBB shoes to support the family brand, and he wanted to honor his father when he did that. However, if granted a chance to do it all over again, he would do things differently.
“If I can go back, I would obviously do it different. I will actually get an agent, be in the meetings myself, do what I want to do,” Ball added.
