NCAA reduces suspension for Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The NCAA has reduced Vols linebacker Arion Carter's suspension, which happened in response to an agent paying for a $427 flight to an NFL training facility during the pre-draft process, to just one game, Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said Tuesday.

According to White, the NCAA agreed to reduce Carter's suspension from two games to one. Still, White said the suspension is an example of the NCAA applying archaic rules without evolving and putting student-athletes' experiences above bureaucracy.

"While I strongly agree with Josh Heupel’s comment about how ridiculous this is in our current environment, 1 game is better than 2. If players around the country are allowed to leave NFL camps and play college football, the NCAA should do the right thing and drop it all altogether," White said in part on social media.

White also pointed out that he doesn't think Carter deserves the "unnecessary distraction" of the suspension, adding Carter is "everything that is right about college sports, a team leader who has already earned his degree."

At the end of July, Vols head coach Josh Heupel released a statement on Carter's suspension, explaining that after Carter declared for the NFL Draft, he signed with an agent and accepted a $427.48 flight to begin the pre-draft process. Ultimately, Carter withdrew from the draft because he needed a surgery on his foot and decided it was in his best interest to return to Tennessee for his senior season. After withdrawing, Heupel said, Carter disengaged with the agent in connection to the NFL and paid back the cost of the flight in January.

In August, Carter graduated with a degree in public health after playing three seasons at Tennessee. Despite battling a foot injury, Tennessee Athletics says Carter led the SEC in tackles per game, with an average of 7.6 tackles and 76 total tackles last season. The university said despite undergoing surgery for on his foot in January, Carter will be ready for the 2026 season.

With the suspension reduced to one game, Carter will only be out of the Vols' home opener against Furman on September 5.
