The Brooklyn Nets are in the slower part of their offseason after taking care of business in the 2026 NBA Draft, summer league circuit, and in free-agency. Brooklyn has had some bad luck over the past few years and general manager Sean Marks and the front office has understandably drawn some criticism, but it seems that some are recognizing that the process the Nets are undergoing is the right one.
"Brooklyn's front office probably faces the biggest disparity between perception and reality of any in basketball. The prevailing narrative surrounding the Nets is that they've been poorly run and their outlook is bleak," Sam Quinn wrote for CBS Sports when discussing Brooklyn is his semi-annual NBA front-office rankings. Quinn ranked the Nets as having the 16th-best front office out of 30 teams because of the process and not just the results.
"True, they haven't yet found any truly foundational players, but they have a clean cap sheet and a six-pick first-round draft surplus (not including swaps, though in fairness they owe their 2027 swap to the Houston Rockets)," Quinn continued in his explanation of Brooklyn's ranking. "The reality is that this is a pretty promising blank slate if you're willing to take the long view."
It's fair to criticize Marks and the front office for not finding a star-level player yet, but there has to be some time given to explore all options towards acquiring said star player. Once the Nets officially ended the big 3 era by trading away Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving during the 2022-23 season, the roster had some interesting players on it such as Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and Ben Simmons.
However, Marks and the front office decided to move towards a full rebuild to put the franchise in a position where it now has at least two first-round picks in five of the next six years. Brooklyn invested heavily in the 2025 NBA Draft to the tune of selecting five players in the class so Marks will be heavily judged on that and rightfully so. Either way, Quinn appears to be among those who still views Brooklyn's front office in a favorable light.
In Sam's NBA front office rankings, the Nets rank 16th, down from being ranked 15th in February. I thought Quinn's opening sentence on Brooklyn was interesting:
