The Brooklyn Nets are in the slow part of their 2026 NBA offseason after taking care of business in the NBA Draft, summer league circuit, and free-agency throughout this summer. Brooklyn made an interesting choice when they selected Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but it makes sense given how some people view his long-term ceiling.
ESPN's NBA insiders recently answered several questions regarding the 2026 draft class and one of those topics was which rookies have the highest long-term ceiling moving forward. The four players that received votes from the insiders with regard to the highest ceiling was Washington Wizards forward AJ Dybantsa, Utah Jazz guard Darryn Peterson, Chicago Bulls forward Caleb Wilson, and Brown.
Brown, 20, is coming off a solid performance in the summer league circuit as he ramped up his playing workload after dealing with a back issue for a significant portion of his freshman season. In four games played across the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League, Brown averaged 15.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 38.8% from the field and 34.6% from behind the three-point line.
"Expectations spiked for Brown after a strong spring on last year's high school all-star circuit. His season at Louisville wound up being mixed with exciting offensive highlights, strong production, injuries and inconsistency," Jonathan Wasserman wrote of Brown in his scouting report for Bleacher Report. "The highs and eye test were persuasive enough to outweigh the lows and inefficiency."
Heading into the 2026-27 season, Brown will be competing with second-year guards in Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf for the starting point guard spot throughout training camp and the preseason. Head coach Jordi Fernandez and general manager Sean Marks chose Brown over other players because of how much they believed in his talent and it seems like ESPN feels the same way about his future.
