“NEVER A COMPETITION”: Browns Fanbase Fumes as Todd Monken Explains Deshaun Watson’s QB1 Decision

As Todd Monken went about explaining his decision to name Deshaun Watson the Cleveland Browns’ QB1, he mentioned that Shedeur Sanders made it a competition, even though in the offseason it seemed pretty clear to him that Deshaun Watson was the man for the job.

Fans haven’t taken well to the comment, highlighting that it didn’t feel like a competition at all considering all that has happened in the Browns over the last couple of weeks.

“Every player’s a little bit different,” he said to the media on Tuesday.

“You see quarterbacks go in there and right away play well, and you’ve seen others that need some time, and that’s at every position. Some, it happens quicker than others. Some have further to go. I know this, that from the jump in the offseason, when (Sanders) showed some things that I really liked- the way he’s wired- that’s when we made the decision to give him more reps. That’s why we decided to make it a competition. For Shedeur and for us. Early on, it was pretty obvious that Deshaun was ahead.”

Fans have now responded to the comments, making it clear what they think of the decision and the comments, with one saying “THIS WAS NEVER A COMPETITION”.

There has been no dearth of people criticizing the Browns for naming Deshaun Watson as their QB1, with Kyle Brandt of “Good Morning Football” being just one such name.

“Has spent the last 5 years either bad, pouting, injured, or suspended,” he wrote on X.

“Openly engages and antagonizes the fan base, right after another poor showing. Less than 48 hours later: “You’re our guy.” Browns fans, I don’t know how you do it.”

Whether Monken’s decision pays off, only time will tell.
